Have you ever fallen in love with a fabulous sweater, worn it a few times and then something dreadful happens — a pull, a snag, a stray pen, an ill-fated glass of red wine -- and in a moment, what you hoped would be a long romance is over before it began? We certainly have.
Now imagine that treasured sweater you reluctantly parted with reborn as something soft, warm and wonderfully long lasting. Say hello to Sweater Toys' beautiful bunny.
Founder Caitlin Wicker began making Sweater Toys six years ago, following the passing of her sister's beloved stuffed bunny, Pinksey. Her connection to stuffed animals is quite deep: “I understand how real these fuzzy friends feel to their young owners.” Much of her inspiration comes from vintage stuffed animals whose imperfections give them character. Caitlin makes her whimsical toys from her home in Brooklyn, New York.
Caitlin tries to use mostly recycled materials in her designs - from that oh-so-soft cashmere sweater she accidentally shrunk to Grandma's moth-eaten cardigan. She likes the idea of giving new life to something that was once loved so that it can be loved again! Caitlin says, “I’m an avid thrifter, so using recycled materials comes second nature to me.” Friends, family, and customers donate their old sweaters, and Caitlin purchases great finds at thrift stores. After washing each sweater, she transforms it into her adorable toys. The Lila Mae line of Sweater Toys is stuffed with either 100% cotton or bamboo fiber, making them not only fluffy and cuddly, but also green!
